I made it back to Hobart after a total of 1200km, give or take. In western Tasmania I cycled through rain, sleet, hail and snow. Not exactly what I had in mind for my "summer" vacation. At one point my shins were completely numb; brrr. The last few days got nice again, though. The sun came out and I actually had a tailwind. A really good one, too. It was finally a joy to be on a bike, watching people drive by only seeing the world through their windshields, traveling at such a pace that they miss many of the simple things that make cycle touring fantastic: an echidna (an Aussie porcupine) on the side of the road, a butterfly, a wildly patterned ladybug on the handlebars, a quick glimpse through the trees of a grassy meadow. At a bike's pace you can see these things. You see the bugs coming at you in enough time to flinch, if not dodge. Sometimes that flinch is just a quick sucking in of breath, and if you're lucky you'll also suck in the breath that was just sucked in by the bug...
Oh, and I found another poppy field:
I'll be in Bali in just a few short days, where my time will be spent perfecting a sun-burned, heat-stroked, sand-swept, drunken stupor!

amen brother! great little prose there on the joy of cycle touring...
by the way, if you rent a scooter while in Bali, beware the broken parts scam in Bedugul!
Greetings,
My good friend at work has been to Bali several times and said to check out Lovina (her favorite place) and the N. coast. She also said the Rambutan Cottages are a great place to stay, Richard Hood runs those. Good to hear from you and check out the Gamelan for me!
Much love,
Ginny
Thanks for the praise and the warning, Dan.
And thanks for the tips, Ginny. Never heard of a Gamelan, but it sounds fantastic; I'll definitely try to find one.
I haven't even taken the time to research Bali yet, so I have no idea where to go. I'll have to hang out in the book store tomorrow. Any other suggestions?

so that photo of the poppy field? it is so my desktop right now. it makes me laugh. :o)
I dont know much about Bali, but they have some of the most amazing indigineous music. If you get an opportunity to see some of it live, go for it! its beautiful stuff!! it was one of two sections in my world music class that i enjoyed!
Ello! I don't think I ever gave you the info from Robbie...he said for your first night or two stay in Kuta at Puri Rama on or near Jacan Legian (spelling on the last word might be wrong, but it is right behind the Bali Bomb Memorial). Ask for Willy or Duwa and tell them you know Robbie. I am so jealous although I did just spend the last three days with Katie and one day with Brody. It was surprisingly soothing to be back with them.
Katie and I are headed to Portland Monday! Have a blast and enjoy the burn!!

Thanks RaJa! I'm in Sanur now, and have rented a car to explore the island, but I think I'll spend my last couple days in Kuta, surfing hopefully. It's the rainy season, so I haven't seen the sun yet, which is probably good because it's hot and humid enough under the clouds. Have fun in Portland. Drink an IPA for me. Er, maybe have Katie drink it. If you head out to Hood River, let me know, I'm sure I could find a couch for you...
cheers,
b
